When President Trump dismissed Pam Bondi as Attorney General on Thursday, he made a choice that speaks volumes about his vision for the Department of Justice. Her replacement, Todd Blanche — Trump’s former personal criminal defence lawyer — steps into the role carrying the expectations of a president who wants the DOJ to prioritise his administration’s political agenda. Blanche has wasted no time in signalling his direction of travel.
Blanche’s DOJ Priorities: ActBlue and Crypto
In his first public statements as acting Attorney General, Blanche made clear that investigating ActBlue — the Democratic Party’s primary small-dollar fundraising platform — is a top priority. Blanche stated that allegations of foreign donations flowing through ActBlue and the organisation “lying about it” would be actively pursued by the DOJ under his watch. The investigation signals an aggressive posture toward Democratic infrastructure from the new acting AG.
Equally significant is Blanche’s track record on cryptocurrency. As Deputy Attorney General, he disbanded the DOJ’s National Cryptocurrency Enforcement Team and directed prosecutors to avoid pursuing regulatory violation cases in the crypto industry. This drew controversy when it emerged that Blanche held between $159,000 and $485,000 in various cryptocurrencies at the time he signed the crypto enforcement memo — a potential ethics violation that critics say should disqualify him from the role.
From Defence Lawyer to Top Law Enforcer
The transition from criminal defence attorney to the nation’s chief law enforcement officer is an unusual one. Blanche spent years defending Trump against the legal cases that threatened to end his political career, including the hush money trial in New York and the federal cases brought by special counsel Jack Smith. Both federal cases were eventually dropped after Trump’s election victory.
Critics argue that a lawyer whose primary professional identity is built around protecting one individual — the President — cannot credibly lead an institution that is supposed to operate independently of political pressure. Supporters counter that Blanche’s legal expertise and his understanding of the cases brought against Trump give him a unique perspective on what they describe as the politicisation of federal prosecutions.
The Epstein Files Question
One of the most politically charged issues Blanche inherits is the ongoing pressure over the Epstein files. There has been sustained demand from multiple corners — including from within the MAGA movement itself — for the DOJ to release fuller information about Jeffrey Epstein’s associates. Blanche has acknowledged the sensitivity of the matter but has offered no firm commitments about timelines or the scope of any disclosure.
How Blanche navigates the Epstein question will be an early test of whether he intends to act as an independent attorney general or as an extension of the White House’s political operation.
Senate Confirmation and Future Prospects
As acting AG, Blanche does not require Senate confirmation for his temporary role. Should Trump wish to make the appointment permanent, however, a confirmation hearing would provide senators from both parties an opportunity to question Blanche on his independence, his financial interests, and his approach to the DOJ’s core mandate.
Republican senators have so far been largely supportive, though some within the party’s traditional conservative wing have expressed private reservations about placing someone so personally connected to the president in charge of federal law enforcement. Democrats have been more vocal in their opposition, questioning whether the rule of law can be meaningfully upheld by a DOJ led by Trump’s personal lawyer.
The Bigger Picture
Todd Blanche’s appointment as acting Attorney General is the latest in a series of moves by the Trump administration to install loyalists at the helm of key institutions. Whether Blanche can transcend his role as Trump’s legal defender and lead the DOJ with the independence the office demands remains the central question of his tenure.
