The 2026 World Snooker Championship is almost here, and excitement is building to a fever pitch as the sport’s biggest names prepare to battle it out at the iconic Crucible Theatre in Sheffield. Running from 18 April to 4 May, this year’s tournament holds special significance — it marks the 50th consecutive year that the World Snooker Championship has been staged at the Crucible, a venue that has witnessed some of the most dramatic moments in sporting history.
Who’s in the Frame for Glory?
Defending champion Zhao Xintong returns to Sheffield looking to retain his title and cement his place among the greats of the modern game. The Chinese star won the title in stunning fashion last year and has since become one of the hottest properties in the sport. World number one Judd Trump is also in the frame, having spent the better part of the last decade knocking on the door and lifting the trophy he so desperately craves.
But no discussion about the World Championship is complete without mentioning Ronnie O’Sullivan. The Rocket will once again bid for a record-breaking eighth world title, a feat that would put him in a category of his own. At 50 years old, O’Sullivan remains one of the most compelling figures in snooker, and fans up and down the country will be tuning in hoping to see more magic from a true legend of the game.
Qualifying Drama Has Already Begun
The 2026 qualifiers, which ran from April 6 to 15 at the English Institute of Sport in Sheffield, produced their fair share of stories. One of the most remarkable came from 15-year-old Polish teenager Michał Szubarczyk, who became the youngest player ever to win a World Championship qualifying match when he beat Ng On-yee 10-7 — a result that sent shockwaves through the snooker world and raised serious questions about the depth of talent coming through.
Meanwhile, veteran Marco Fu produced a stunning comeback, beating Liam Davies 10-9 on the final black to keep his Crucible dreams alive. Moments like those — where one shot can end or extend a career-defining run — are precisely what makes snooker so captivating.
Chinese teenagers continue to impress too, with 17-year-old Lan Yuhao producing a devastating display to beat Chatchapong Nasa 10-5, demonstrating just how rapidly the Asian contingent is developing.
Prize Money and Prestige
The 2026 World Snooker Championship carries a total prize fund of £2,395,000, with the winner taking home £500,000. For context, a first-round loser at the main event still picks up £30,000 — more than many working people in the UK earn in a year. Yet for the top players, it is the prestige of the title rather than the money that keeps them coming back year after year.
How to Watch
BBC Sport has long been the home of snooker in the UK, and coverage of the 2026 World Championship will be available across BBC One, BBC Two, and the BBC iPlayer. Eurosport and Discovery+ will also provide extensive live coverage for those looking for more comprehensive access to every table across the tournament.
Why This Year Feels Different
There is something undeniably special about a 50th anniversary. Sheffield has seen five decades of drama at the Crucible, from Dennis Taylor’s famous black ball finish in 1985 to Steve Davis’s dominance in the eighties, Stephen Hendry’s seven world titles, and O’Sullivan’s ongoing pursuit of greatness. This year’s event carries the weight of all that history.
Add in the hunger of Zhao Xintong to defend, Trump’s ambition to finally dominate this tournament the way he has so many others, and the tantalising possibility of O’Sullivan chasing title number eight, and you have the ingredients for one of the most memorable World Championships in years. Sheffield beckons — and the Crucible is ready to write the next chapter of snooker’s greatest story.
